What is this?
A buzzing light fitting is common and usually related to the type of bulb, the ballast in a fluorescent fitting, or a compatibility issue with a dimmer. Most light fitting buzzes are annoying rather than dangerous, but some causes do need attention. Fluorescent tubes are particularly well known for buzzing as their ballast ages, and LED bulbs can buzz if they are running on an incompatible dimmer or transformer.
Common causes
- Ageing or faulty ballast in a fluorescent light fitting
- LED bulb incompatible with the existing dimmer or transformer
- Loose bulb not seated properly in the fitting
- Low-quality LED driver producing audible noise
- Vibrating metal components in the light fitting resonating at mains frequency
- 12V halogen transformer buzzing under load
Is it dangerous?
Usually not dangerous. A buzzing ballast in a fluorescent fitting can eventually fail and may leak a small amount of tar-like substance — replace the fitting if this happens. A loose bulb connection could theoretically cause arcing, so ensure bulbs are properly seated. If the buzzing is accompanied by flickering, a burning smell, or the fitting feels hot, it should be investigated.
Can I fix it myself?
Try tightening or replacing the bulb first. If using a dimmer, switch to bulbs confirmed as compatible with your dimmer model. For fluorescent fittings, replacing the tube may help, but if the ballast is the source, the whole fitting usually needs replacing. Replacing a light fitting is something a confident DIYer can do with the circuit switched off at the consumer unit, but if in doubt, call an electrician.
When to call an electrician
Call an electrician if you want a fluorescent fitting replaced with a modern LED fitting, if the buzzing is coming from the ceiling rose rather than the fitting (suggesting a wiring issue), if the fitting feels hot or smells of burning, or if you are not confident doing the work yourself.
What will an electrician do?
Inspect the light fitting and identify the source of the buzzing
Check the ceiling rose connections for looseness or damage
Replace the fitting with a suitable LED alternative if needed
Install a compatible LED driver or transformer
Test the circuit after the repair
Typical cost
£60 – £150
Replacing a single light fitting is a quick job. Costs increase if multiple fittings need replacing or if access is difficult (e.g., high ceilings or recessed fittings).
