LED Lights Flickering

Your LED lights are flickering, strobing, or flashing — a common issue when switching to LED bulbs.

£60 – £180Low Risk

What is this?

LED flickering is one of the most common lighting complaints in UK homes, especially after upgrading from halogen or incandescent bulbs. LEDs work very differently from traditional bulbs — they are sensitive to the quality of their power supply, dimmer compatibility, and even the design of the LED driver inside the bulb. Most LED flickering is annoying rather than dangerous.

Common causes

  • Incompatible dimmer switch — most older dimmers are designed for higher-wattage incandescent bulbs and do not work properly with LEDs
  • Cheap or poor-quality LED bulbs with inadequate internal drivers
  • LED bulb not rated as dimmable being used on a dimmer circuit
  • Loose connection at the bulb, fitting, or ceiling rose
  • Electrical interference from other devices on the circuit
  • LED driver reaching end of life or overheating

Is it dangerous?

LED flickering is almost always a compatibility or quality issue rather than a dangerous fault. However, if the flickering is accompanied by a burning smell, buzzing from the fitting, or the bulb or fitting feels excessively hot, there may be a wiring issue that needs checking.

Can I fix it myself?

First, try replacing the LED bulb with a reputable brand — cheap LEDs are a common cause. Check that dimmable LEDs are installed if you have a dimmer switch. If you recently changed from halogen to LED, your dimmer switch almost certainly needs upgrading to an LED-compatible (trailing-edge) dimmer. Also ensure the bulb is properly seated in the fitting.

When to call an electrician

Call an electrician if replacing the bulb does not fix the flickering, if you need a new LED-compatible dimmer switch installed, if multiple LED fittings on the same circuit are flickering, or if the flickering started without any changes to bulbs or fittings.

What will an electrician do?

1

Test the circuit voltage and check for fluctuations

2

Assess dimmer switch compatibility and replace with an LED-compatible dimmer if needed

3

Check wiring connections at the fitting and ceiling rose

4

Test for electrical interference from other devices on the circuit

5

Recommend suitable LED bulbs and dimmers for your installation

Typical cost

£60 – £180

A dimmer switch replacement is typically £60–£100 including parts. If the issue is wiring-related, fault-finding costs more.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do my LED lights flicker?
The most common cause is an incompatible dimmer switch. Older dimmers designed for halogen or incandescent bulbs cannot regulate the much lower wattage of LEDs properly, causing flickering. Cheap LED bulbs with poor internal drivers are also a frequent cause.
Do I need a special dimmer switch for LED lights?
Yes. LEDs require a trailing-edge (LED-compatible) dimmer switch. Standard leading-edge dimmers designed for incandescent bulbs will cause flickering, buzzing, and reduced bulb life.
Can non-dimmable LEDs cause flickering?
Yes. If a non-dimmable LED is installed on a circuit with a dimmer switch, it will flicker, strobe, or fail to turn on at low settings. Always check the packaging for dimmable compatibility.
Are cheap LED bulbs worth it?
Generally not. Budget LED bulbs often have poor driver circuits that cause flickering and premature failure. Reputable brands like Philips, Osram, and Integral LED are more reliable and still very affordable.
Will the flickering damage the LED bulb?
Flickering caused by dimmer incompatibility can reduce LED bulb lifespan. The bulb's driver circuit is stressed by the irregular power supply, which may cause premature failure.
