What is this?
Wires hanging from the ceiling are typically the remains of a lighting circuit where a fitting has been removed. The conductors may be live even with the light switch off (the switch may only break the live, leaving the neutral and earth still connected). This is a common issue in properties undergoing renovation, after a tenant moves out, or where DIY work was left unfinished.
Common causes
- Light fitting removed without properly terminating the wires
- Renovation work left incomplete with wires hanging
- Previous tenant or owner took light fittings and left bare wires
- Ceiling rose removed but wiring not disconnected or enclosed
- Old fitting failed and was cut down rather than properly disconnected
Is it dangerous?
Yes, this is dangerous. The wires may be live even with the light switch turned off, depending on how the circuit is wired. Touching exposed conductors can cause a serious electric shock. Hanging wires can also be pulled, damaging connections in the ceiling void and creating further hazards. Keep people and especially children away from hanging wires.
Can I fix it myself?
Do not touch the wires. Turn off the lighting circuit at the consumer unit. If you are not sure which MCB controls the circuit, turn off the main switch. Do not cut, tape, or twist the wires. You can install a new light fitting or a blanking plate yourself if you are competent and have turned off the circuit, but if in doubt, call an electrician.
When to call an electrician
Call an electrician if you are not confident working with electrical connections, if the wires appear damaged, or if there are multiple locations with hanging wires. An electrician can either install new fittings or properly terminate and enclose the wires with a ceiling rose or blanking plate.
What will an electrician do?
Isolate the lighting circuit safely
Inspect the hanging wires and connections in the ceiling void
Install a new light fitting, pendant, or blanking plate as required
Ensure all connections are correctly terminated and enclosed
Test the circuit to confirm it is safe after the work
Typical cost
£50 – £150
Per light point — fitting a blanking plate or new pendant is quick work. Multiple points or damaged wiring will cost more.
