What is this?
A tingling sensation from an appliance means a small amount of electrical current is leaking from the appliance to its metal casing. In a correctly working installation, this leakage current should flow safely to earth through the earth conductor in the plug and cable. If you can feel it, the earthing pathway is either broken, has high resistance, or the leakage is high enough to be felt despite the earthing. Some appliances (particularly older ones) have small amounts of normal leakage, but you should never feel a distinct tingle or shock.
Common causes
- Broken earth conductor in the appliance flex or plug
- Internal insulation breakdown inside the appliance
- Damp or condensation inside the appliance casing
- Missing or damaged earth connection at the socket
- Appliance EMC filter creating perceptible leakage current on ungrounded casing
Is it dangerous?
Yes, this is dangerous. A tingling sensation is your body conducting electricity. While the current may be small now, the underlying fault can worsen rapidly. If the earth connection fails completely, the full mains voltage could appear on the casing. Appliances near water (washing machines, dishwashers, kettles) are especially risky because wet conditions lower your body's resistance to current.
Can I fix it myself?
Stop using the appliance immediately and unplug it. Check the plug — the earth pin (the top, longer pin) should have a wire connected to it. If the appliance is new and has a two-pin Euro plug with a UK adapter, the adapter may not have an earth connection, which is a common cause of tingling on metal-cased appliances. Do not use the appliance again until it has been tested.
When to call an electrician
Call an electrician if the tingling comes from multiple appliances (suggesting a house earthing fault), if you cannot see an obvious plug or cable issue, or if the appliance is hardwired (like a cooker or shower). A single faulty appliance may just need replacing, but repeated tingling from different appliances suggests the earthing in your installation is compromised.
What will an electrician do?
Test the appliance for earth leakage using a portable appliance tester
Check the earth continuity of the socket and circuit
Test the main earthing conductor and bonding at the consumer unit
Check for broken earth wires in the appliance flex
Replace any faulty components and re-test to confirm safety
Typical cost
£80 – £200
If the fault is just a broken earth wire in a plug, it is a minimal cost. If the house earthing needs repair, costs will be higher.
