What is this?
A security light that stays on continuously is usually caused by a stuck PIR sensor, incorrect settings, or a wiring fault that bypasses the sensor. While not dangerous, it wastes energy, can annoy neighbours, and means the light is not functioning as a security device because it no longer responds to movement.
Common causes
- PIR sensor stuck in the on position due to a fault
- Manual override switch left in the always-on position
- Light was power-cycled quickly (off-on-off-on) which activates test or override mode on many PIR lights
- Wiring fault bypassing the PIR sensor
- Sensor detecting constant heat sources like boiler flues or air conditioning units
Is it dangerous?
This is not dangerous, but it is wasteful and means your security light is not providing motion-activated protection. A light that is always on is actually less effective as a security deterrent because movement no longer triggers a noticeable change.
Can I fix it myself?
Try turning the light off at the switch for at least 30 seconds, then turn it back on. This resets most PIR sensors. Check if your light has a manual override — many PIR lights activate an always-on mode when the switch is flicked off and on within a few seconds. If there are adjustable dials on the unit, check the timer setting is not set to maximum. Some lights have a daylight sensor that may be faulty.
When to call an electrician
Call an electrician if resetting the light does not fix the problem, if the PIR sensor appears to have failed in the on position, or if you suspect a wiring issue is bypassing the sensor. Also call if the light is overheating from being on continuously.
What will an electrician do?
Inspect the PIR light and test the sensor function
Check the wiring to ensure the sensor is correctly connected in the circuit
Reset or replace the PIR sensor if it has failed
Replace the entire fitting if the sensor cannot be independently replaced
Reposition the sensor away from heat sources that may cause false triggers
Typical cost
£60 – £150
Usually resolved with a sensor reset or fitting replacement. A new LED PIR security light supplied and fitted typically costs £80–£150.
