How it works

1

Design and layout planning

Your electrician surveys the driveway to plan fitting positions, cable routes, and control options. They consider the driveway length, width, surface type, and whether you want border lighting (bollards), surface-recessed lighting, pillar lighting, or a combination. Light spacing is planned to give even coverage without dark spots.

2

Groundwork and cable installation

Trenches are dug along the cable route at the required depth (minimum 500mm for mains-voltage SWA cable). Cables are laid with warning tape above. For driveways with block paving or tarmac, the surface is cut, cable installed, and the surface reinstated. Ducting is laid for future expansion where practical.

3

Circuit installation

A dedicated outdoor circuit is run from the consumer unit with RCD protection. An outdoor-rated isolator switch is installed for maintenance access. The circuit is designed with capacity for the total fitting load plus a margin for future additions.

4

Fitting installation

Each light fitting is installed at its planned position — bollards set in concrete, recessed ground lights set into the driveway surface with drainage provision, or pillar lanterns mounted on gate posts or walls. All connections use IP-rated junction boxes.

5

Control system installation

The automatic control is installed — photocell for dusk-to-dawn operation, PIR sensors for motion-activated lighting, a timer, or a combination. Smart controls with app operation can be included if required.

6

Testing and commissioning

The full circuit is tested for insulation resistance, earth continuity, and RCD operation. Light output and coverage are verified after dark. An Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC) is issued and the work is notified to Building Control.

Full circuit testing to BS 7671 standards
Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC) and Part P notification

What's involved

Driveway lighting improves safety, security, and kerb appeal — guiding vehicles and visitors from the road to your front door while deterring intruders. Installation covers selecting the right fittings for your driveway (bollard lights for borders, recessed ground lights for surfaces, pillar-mounted lanterns for entrance gates), running armoured or conduit-protected cables underground, and connecting to a dedicated outdoor circuit with automatic control via photocell, PIR sensor, or timer. Most driveway lighting projects take one to two days depending on the number of fittings and cable run complexity.

Driveway lighting requires a new outdoor circuit, which is notifiable work under Part P of the Building Regulations. All fittings must comply with BS 7671 Section 714 for outdoor installations, with appropriate IP ratings for their location — recessed ground lights in driveways need to withstand vehicle weight and standing water. Underground cable runs must use SWA cable or cable in conduit at the correct burial depth. Professional design also ensures even light distribution without dark spots or glare that could dazzle drivers.

Typical cost: £300–£1,200per installation

Every job is different — pricing depends on your property, location, and specific requirements. Describe what you need and a qualified electrician will quote you directly.

How long does it take?

One day for a simple installation with 4-6 bollard lights along a gravel driveway. Two days for larger schemes involving recessed ground lights, hard surface cutting, pillar lights, and long cable runs.

Regulations & safety

Safety notice

Driveway lighting requires a new outdoor circuit, which is notifiable work under Part P. It must be installed by a qualified electrician registered with a competent person scheme.

Recessed ground lights in driveways must be rated for vehicle loads. Standard garden ground lights will crack under tyre pressure, exposing live connections. Always specify drive-over rated fittings for any light installed in the driveway surface.

Underground cables must be buried at the correct depth (minimum 500mm for mains-voltage SWA) with warning tape above. Record the cable route — future landscaping or driveway work could damage shallow cables.

Part P of the Building Regulations (Approved Document P)

A new outdoor lighting circuit is notifiable work. It must be carried out by an electrician registered with a competent person scheme, or inspected and certified by Building Control.

BS 7671:2018+A2:2022 (IET Wiring Regulations), Section 714

Section 714 covers outdoor electrical installations, requiring appropriate IP ratings, cable protection, burial depths, and earthing for driveway lighting systems.

BS EN 60598 — Luminaire Safety Standards

Recessed ground lights installed in driveways must comply with relevant parts of BS EN 60598, including load-bearing ratings for vehicle traffic and IP ratings for ground-level water exposure.

What to expect

Groundwork is by far the biggest cost. A 20-metre driveway with bollards on both sides needs 40+ metres of trenching. If the driveway surface is tarmac or concrete rather than gravel or soil borders, cutting and reinstating the surface adds significant cost — potentially £400-800 depending on the material.
Recessed ground lights in driveways look sleek but require more maintenance than bollards. Drainage is critical — if water pools in the fitting housing, it will fail. Ensure your electrician installs fittings with proper drainage and uses IP67 or IP68 rated units designed for ground-level installation.
For long driveways, voltage drop can be an issue. Your electrician will calculate the total cable length and fitting load to ensure adequate voltage at the furthest fitting. This may mean upsizing the cable or using a higher-voltage supply with step-down transformers.
Photocell control (dusk-to-dawn) costs almost nothing to run with LED fittings — a typical 10-bollard LED driveway installation uses around 50-100W total, costing roughly £15-30 per year. PIR-activated lighting uses even less but is dark until triggered.
Consider future-proofing: lay spare ducting during installation. Adding lights later without ducting means digging up the driveway again.

Frequently asked questions

What type of driveway lights should I choose?
Bollard lights along driveway borders are the most popular option — easy to install, visible, and available in many styles. Recessed ground lights give a cleaner look but need drive-over rated fittings and proper drainage. Pillar-mounted lanterns on gate posts or entrance walls are ideal for marking the driveway entrance. Many installations combine two or three types.
Can driveway lights be run on 12V instead of mains?
12V systems are available for driveway lighting but are limited in brightness and cable run length. For driveways over 10 metres, mains-voltage fittings are more reliable. 12V bollards work well for short driveways or decorative accent lighting alongside brighter mains-voltage fittings.
How far apart should driveway lights be spaced?
Bollard lights are typically spaced 2-3 metres apart for even coverage. Closer spacing gives a more dramatic effect and better visibility; wider spacing is more subtle. Your electrician can adjust spacing during the design phase based on the light output of the chosen fittings and the width of the driveway.
Will driveway lights add value to my property?
Well-designed exterior lighting is consistently cited by estate agents as a feature that enhances kerb appeal and perceived property value. It also improves safety and security, which are key selling points. The investment is modest relative to other home improvements.
Can I control driveway lights from my phone?
Yes. Smart lighting controllers can be integrated into the circuit, allowing you to switch lights on and off, set schedules, and adjust brightness from an app. This can be combined with photocell or PIR control so the lights work automatically but can be overridden remotely.
