How it works
Site survey and tub specification
Your electrician checks the hot tub's electrical requirements (typically 32A at 240V for most domestic tubs, or 40A for larger models), assesses the consumer unit capacity, plans the cable route, and identifies the isolator switch position. They verify the main supply can handle the additional load.
Consumer unit assessment
The consumer unit is checked for spare ways and adequate capacity. A 32A or 40A RCBO is installed to protect the new circuit. If the consumer unit has no spare ways or insufficient capacity, an upgrade may be required.
Cable run and isolator switch
A suitably sized cable (6mm² for 32A or 10mm² for 40A) is run from the consumer unit to a lockable rotary isolator switch, then from the isolator to the hot tub connection point. The isolator must be within sight of the hot tub and at least 2 metres from the tub edge. External cable runs use SWA or cable in conduit.
Hot tub connection
The circuit is connected to the hot tub's terminal block following the manufacturer's wiring diagram. The connection is made inside the tub's equipment compartment with the supply cable entering through a suitable gland.
Testing and certification
Full circuit testing is carried out including insulation resistance, earth fault loop impedance, and RCD trip time verification. An Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC) is issued and the work is notified to Building Control.
Handover and safety briefing
The electrician demonstrates the isolator switch operation and explains when it should be used (servicing, water changes, and any maintenance). You receive the EIC and are advised to keep it with the hot tub documentation.
What's included
What's involved
Hot tub wiring is one of the most safety-critical domestic electrical installations. A hot tub combines high-current electrical equipment with water — getting it wrong has fatal consequences. Installation involves running a dedicated 32A or 40A circuit from the consumer unit to a lockable isolator switch within sight of the hot tub, then on to the tub's connection point. The circuit must have 30mA RCD protection and be designed to BS 7671 Section 702, which covers swimming pools and hot tubs. Most installations take a full day.
Hot tub wiring is notifiable work under Part P of the Building Regulations and must be carried out by a qualified electrician registered with a competent person scheme. BS 7671 Section 702 imposes strict requirements on electrical installations near water, including zoning rules that dictate what equipment can be placed where. The isolator switch must be within sight of the hot tub but far enough away that it cannot be reached from the water. A plug-in hot tub on a 13A socket is limited to small inflatable models — any permanent or high-performance hot tub requires a dedicated hard-wired circuit.

Typical cost: £300–£800per installation
Every job is different — pricing depends on your property, location, and specific requirements. Describe what you need and a qualified electrician will quote you directly.
How long does it take?
A full day (5-8 hours) for most installations, including cable run, isolator switch, and testing. Longer if the consumer unit needs upgrading or the cable route involves trenching across a garden or patio.
Regulations & safety
Safety notice
Hot tub wiring must be carried out by a qualified electrician registered with a competent person scheme. The combination of high-current electricity and water makes this one of the most dangerous domestic installations if done incorrectly.
The lockable isolator switch must be within sight of the hot tub so you can confirm it is off before entering the water for maintenance. It must also be far enough away (at least 2 metres from the tub edge) that it cannot be reached from inside the tub.
Never connect a hard-wired hot tub to a standard 13A socket or extension lead. The tub's heater and pump draw far more current than a 13A circuit can safely supply — this creates a fire risk.
Part P of the Building Regulations (Approved Document P)
Hot tub wiring is notifiable work involving a new circuit in a special location. It must be carried out by an electrician registered with a competent person scheme.
BS 7671:2018+A2:2022 (IET Wiring Regulations), Section 702
Section 702 covers electrical installations in swimming pools, hot tubs, and their surrounding zones. It defines three zones around the water with specific requirements for each, and mandates 30mA RCD protection and supplementary bonding.
IET Guidance Note 7 — Special Locations
Provides detailed practical guidance on installing electrical equipment in locations covered by Section 702, including zoning diagrams, cable routing, and isolator switch positioning.
BS 7671 Regulation 537 — Isolation and Switching
Requires a means of isolation for maintenance purposes. For hot tubs, this must be a lockable isolator switch within sight of the tub, positioned at least 2 metres from the tub edge.
