How it works

1

Survey and positioning

Your electrician assesses the best position for the outdoor socket — typically on an external wall near the consumer unit to keep the cable run short. They consider what you will use it for, the distance to the garden, and whether the socket needs to be sheltered from direct rain.

2

Circuit installation

A dedicated radial circuit is run from the consumer unit to the socket position, protected by a 20A RCBO (combined MCB and 30mA RCD). The cable is routed through the wall using a suitable gland and sealed against water ingress.

3

Socket fitting

An IP66-rated weatherproof socket is mounted on the external wall. IP66 means it is protected against powerful jets of water and total dust ingress. The socket has a spring-loaded cover that closes automatically when not in use.

4

Testing and certification

The circuit is tested for insulation resistance, earth fault loop impedance, and RCD trip time. An Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC) is issued and the work is notified to Building Control via the electrician's competent person scheme.

What's involved

An outdoor socket gives you a convenient, safe power supply for garden tools, pressure washers, outdoor entertainment, festive lighting, and anything else you need power for outside. Installation involves fitting an IP66-rated weatherproof socket on an external wall, running a dedicated circuit from the consumer unit with 30mA RCD protection, and ensuring the full installation complies with BS 7671 Section 714 for outdoor electrical work. Most installations are completed in half a day.

Installing an outdoor socket is notifiable work under Part P of the Building Regulations because it involves a new circuit in a special location. It must be carried out by a qualified electrician registered with a competent person scheme. Running an extension lead from an indoor socket through a window or door is dangerous — the cable is not rated for outdoor use, the socket has no weatherproofing, and there is no dedicated RCD protection. An extension lead outdoors is the single most common cause of electric shock in domestic gardens.

Typical cost: £120–£300per socket

Every job is different — pricing depends on your property, location, and specific requirements. Describe what you need and a qualified electrician will quote you directly.

How long does it take?

Half a day (3-4 hours) for a standard installation with a short cable run from the consumer unit. Longer if the consumer unit needs a spare way adding or the cable route is complex.

Regulations & safety

Safety notice

Never use an indoor extension lead to power outdoor equipment. Indoor cables are not rated for outdoor use and indoor sockets have no weatherproofing — this is the most common cause of electric shock in domestic gardens.

Outdoor sockets must be protected by a 30mA RCD. This trips the circuit in milliseconds if a fault is detected, preventing electric shock. The RCD should be tested monthly using the test button.

Even with an IP66 socket, do not leave plugs connected in heavy rain if the equipment is not in use. Water can track along cables and enter connections that are not fully sealed.

Part P of the Building Regulations (Approved Document P)

A new outdoor socket circuit is notifiable work. It must be installed by an electrician registered with a competent person scheme, or inspected and certified by Building Control.

BS 7671:2018+A2:2022 (IET Wiring Regulations), Section 714

Section 714 covers outdoor installations, requiring IP-rated enclosures, RCD protection, cable protection against mechanical damage, and specific earthing arrangements.

BS EN 60529 — IP Rating Standard

Defines the Ingress Protection ratings for electrical enclosures. Outdoor sockets must be rated at least IP66 (protected against powerful water jets and total dust ingress) when the cover is closed.

What to expect

The main cost variable is the cable run distance from the consumer unit to the socket. A socket on the same wall as the consumer unit might need 3 metres of cable. A socket at the far end of the house could need 15-20 metres, potentially requiring external trunking or buried conduit, which adds to the cost.
If your consumer unit has no spare ways, a small upgrade or the addition of a dual RCD incomer may be needed to accommodate the new circuit. This can add £100-200 to the installation cost.
Think about where you will actually use power in the garden. A socket by the back door is convenient for a pressure washer, but if you mainly need power for a shed, summer house, or at the bottom of the garden, a different solution (such as an armoured cable run to an outbuilding) may be more practical.
Twin sockets are only marginally more expensive than single sockets and are worth having — once you have outdoor power, you will find more uses for it than you expected.

Frequently asked questions

Can I install an outdoor socket myself?
No. An outdoor socket requires a new dedicated circuit, which is notifiable work under Part P of the Building Regulations. It must be installed by a qualified electrician registered with a competent person scheme (NICEIC, NAPIT, ELECSA, or equivalent). DIY installation is illegal and could invalidate your home insurance.
What IP rating does an outdoor socket need?
A minimum of IP66 when the cover is closed. This protects against powerful jets of water and total dust ingress. When the cover is open and a plug is inserted, the rating drops — so sockets should be positioned in sheltered locations where practical.
Do I need a separate circuit for an outdoor socket?
Yes. BS 7671 and best practice require outdoor sockets to be on a dedicated circuit with their own 30mA RCD protection. This ensures a fault on the outdoor circuit does not trip indoor circuits, and the RCD provides shock protection specific to the higher-risk outdoor environment.
Can I use an outdoor socket for a hot tub or electric heater?
No. Hot tubs require a dedicated high-current circuit (typically 32A or 40A) with specific protection — a standard 13A outdoor socket cannot supply the power needed. Outdoor electric heaters may work on a 13A socket if they are rated below 3kW, but check the manufacturer's requirements.
How many outdoor sockets can I have on one circuit?
A single 20A radial circuit can comfortably supply 2-3 double outdoor sockets. However, it is rare to need more than one or two sockets on a domestic property. If you need power in multiple locations around the garden, multiple sockets on the same circuit are more cost-effective than separate circuits for each.
