How it works

1

Site survey and system design

The installer walks the property to identify vulnerable areas — entry points, driveways, garden access, and blind spots. They recommend camera types (bullet, dome, PTZ), positions, and the number of channels needed. Cable routes from each camera location to the NVR position are planned.

2

Cable installation

For wired PoE systems, Cat5e or Cat6 cable is run from each camera location back to the NVR. Cables are routed through lofts, wall cavities, or external trunking. Weatherproof junction boxes are used at each outdoor camera position. Wireless systems require only power cable runs or solar panel mounting.

3

Camera mounting

Cameras are mounted at the planned positions using appropriate fixings for the wall type (brick, render, timber). Outdoor cameras are sealed against water ingress. The installer adjusts the angle and field of view of each camera to maximise coverage while avoiding neighbouring properties where possible.

4

NVR/DVR setup and storage

The Network Video Recorder (for IP/PoE systems) or Digital Video Recorder (for analogue systems) is installed in a secure, ventilated location. Hard drives are installed and formatted. Recording schedules, motion detection zones, and retention periods are configured.

5

Network and remote access configuration

The NVR is connected to your router for remote viewing. The installer sets up the manufacturer's app on your phone, configures push notifications for motion alerts, and ensures the system is accessible when you are away from home. Strong passwords are set to prevent unauthorised access.

6

Testing, signage, and handover

Every camera is checked for image quality, night vision, and motion detection sensitivity. If any cameras cover areas beyond your property boundary, the installer advises on CCTV signage requirements. You receive a walkthrough of the app, playback, and export functions.

What's included

Site survey and camera position planning
Supply and installation of IP or analogue cameras
Cat5e/Cat6 cabling for PoE systems (or power runs for wireless)
Weatherproof junction boxes for all outdoor camera positions
NVR or DVR with pre-installed hard drive
Network configuration and router connection
Mobile app setup and remote viewing configuration
Motion detection zone and alert configuration
CCTV warning signage (required if covering public areas)
Full system testing including night vision verification

What's involved

A professionally installed CCTV system provides reliable security coverage with high-definition recording, night vision, and remote viewing from your phone. Installation covers camera positioning for optimal coverage, cable routing (for wired systems), DVR or NVR setup, and network configuration for remote access. A qualified installer ensures cameras are mounted securely, weatherproofed for outdoor use, and positioned to comply with privacy regulations.

A CCTV system involves mounting cameras at height, running power and data cables through walls and lofts, and connecting to a network video recorder. Wired PoE (Power over Ethernet) systems — the most reliable option — require Cat5e/Cat6 cabling from each camera to a central NVR. Outdoor cameras need weatherproof cable entry and proper mounting to withstand wind and rain. If your system covers any area beyond your property boundary (including the pavement or a neighbour's property), you have legal obligations under the Data Protection Act 2018 and UK GDPR. A professional installer ensures correct positioning, reliable recording, and legal compliance.

How long does it take?

A 2-camera wireless system can be installed in half a day (3-4 hours). A 4-camera wired PoE system with NVR typically takes a full day (6-8 hours). Larger systems (8+ cameras) or complex cable runs may take 1.5-2 days.

Regulations & safety

Safety notice

Outdoor cameras must be mounted at sufficient height (typically 2.5m+) to prevent tampering but accessible enough for maintenance. Use appropriate access equipment — never overreach from a ladder.

PoE systems carry 48V DC over the Ethernet cable. While low voltage, connections must be properly terminated with weatherproof enclosures to prevent corrosion and short circuits in outdoor environments.

Ensure your CCTV system does not record neighbours' private spaces (gardens, windows) without their knowledge. Disputes over CCTV positioning are one of the most common neighbourhood complaints.

Data Protection Act 2018 / UK GDPR

If your CCTV system captures images beyond your property boundary — including the public pavement, road, or a neighbour's property — you become a data controller and must comply with data protection law. This includes displaying clear signage, having a lawful basis for recording, responding to subject access requests, and not recording audio without consent.

BS 62676 (Video Surveillance Systems for Security)

The British Standard for video surveillance covering system design, installation, and maintenance. Professional installers follow this standard to ensure reliable recording, adequate image quality for identification, and appropriate storage retention.

ICO Domestic CCTV Guidance

The Information Commissioner's Office provides specific guidance for domestic CCTV use, covering when data protection law applies, signage requirements, and how to handle subject access requests from people captured on your cameras.

What to expect

Wired PoE systems are significantly more reliable than Wi-Fi cameras. Wi-Fi cameras are convenient but suffer from signal drops, latency, and battery drain (if wire-free). For any serious security application, PoE is the professional choice — one cable carries both power and data.
Hard drive size determines how many days of footage you retain. A 4-camera 4MP system recording on motion detection typically needs 2TB for 14 days of retention. If you want 30 days, go for 4TB. 24/7 continuous recording uses roughly double the storage.
Night vision range varies enormously between cameras. Budget cameras claim 30m IR range but often deliver usable images only to 10-15m. For driveways and larger areas, invest in cameras with genuine 30m+ IR range or supplement with security lighting.
If your property has no existing cable routes from camera positions to the NVR location, the cabling work is the biggest part of the installation cost. Properties with accessible loft spaces and internal wall routes are cheaper to wire than solid-wall properties requiring external trunking.
Many insurance companies offer premium discounts for professionally installed CCTV. Ask your insurer what specification they require — some specify a minimum number of cameras or recording days.

Frequently asked questions

Should I choose wired or wireless CCTV?
Wired PoE (Power over Ethernet) is more reliable, delivers higher quality footage, and does not depend on Wi-Fi signal strength. Wireless cameras are easier to install and reposition but can suffer from connectivity issues. For a permanent, dependable system, wired PoE is recommended. Wireless is suitable for rental properties or temporary monitoring.
Do I need planning permission for CCTV cameras?
In most cases, no. Domestic CCTV on your own property does not require planning permission. However, if your property is listed or in a conservation area, external cameras may need consent. If cameras overlook public areas, you must comply with the Data Protection Act 2018 and display appropriate signage.
How many cameras do I need?
A typical 3-bedroom house is well covered with 4 cameras: one covering the front door and driveway, one covering the rear garden, and two covering side access points. Flats usually need 1-2 cameras. Larger or detached properties may need 6-8 cameras for full perimeter coverage.
Can I view my CCTV remotely on my phone?
Yes. All modern NVR systems include a mobile app for remote live viewing, playback, and push notifications when motion is detected. Your installer configures this during setup. You need a stable broadband connection at the property — upload speed of at least 5Mbps is recommended for smooth remote viewing.
What is the difference between a DVR and an NVR?
A DVR (Digital Video Recorder) works with analogue cameras and processes the video at the recorder. An NVR (Network Video Recorder) works with IP cameras and receives digital video over Ethernet. NVR systems generally offer higher resolution, easier cabling (single Cat5e per camera), and more flexible camera placement. NVR with PoE cameras is the current standard for new installations.
