How it works

1

Consultation and system design

Your electrician discusses which rooms you want to control, your preferred ecosystem (Alexa, Google Home, Apple HomeKit), and whether you want smart switches, smart bulbs, or a combination. They assess whether your existing switches have neutral wires available.

2

Wiring assessment

The electrician opens a sample of switch plates to check for neutral wires. Many UK homes have loop-in lighting circuits where the neutral goes directly to the ceiling rose, not the switch. If neutral wires are absent, your electrician discusses options: running neutrals, using no-neutral smart switches (Lutron Caseta, some Philips Hue switches), or using smart bulbs instead.

3

Hub and bridge installation

Most smart lighting systems require a central hub or bridge connected to your router — Philips Hue Bridge, Lutron Smart Bridge, or a Zigbee/Z-Wave hub. The electrician positions and connects the hub, ensuring a reliable network connection.

4

Switch and dimmer installation

Existing switches are replaced with smart switches or dimmers. The electrician connects the live, switched live, earth, and neutral (where required), fits the new switch into the back box, and ensures a secure, flush finish. Deeper back boxes may need fitting to accommodate smart switches.

5

Configuration and testing

Each switch and bulb is paired with the hub, added to the app, assigned to rooms, and tested for on/off, dimming, and scene control. The electrician verifies that manual switch operation still works correctly alongside app control.

6

Handover and demonstration

The electrician demonstrates the app, voice control, schedules, and any automation routines. You receive guidance on adding further devices yourself and details of any electrical certification issued.

What's included

Pre-installation wiring assessment at each switch location
Supply and installation of smart switches or dimmers
Hub or bridge setup and network connection
Deeper back boxes where required for smart switch fitment
Neutral wire run to switch plates if needed (quoted separately for extensive runs)
App configuration, room assignment, and scene setup
Voice assistant integration (Alexa, Google Home, or HomeKit)
Full functional testing of all installed devices
Electrical Installation Certificate if new circuits or significant alterations are made

What's involved

Smart lighting gives you app and voice control over your home lighting — dimming, colour temperature, schedules, and scene presets from your phone or a smart speaker. Installation ranges from simple bulb swaps to full smart switch and dimmer replacements that require neutral wire connections at the switch plate. A qualified electrician ensures the wiring is correct, the smart hub is configured, and everything integrates with your chosen ecosystem (Alexa, Google Home, or Apple HomeKit).

Replacing a standard light switch with a smart switch involves working inside the back box where live mains wiring is present. Many smart switches require a neutral wire at the switch plate — something most UK lighting circuits wired before 2005 do not have. Running a neutral to the switch is electrical work that must be done safely and, if it involves a new circuit or significant alteration, may be notifiable under Part P. A qualified electrician can assess your wiring, advise on the best smart lighting system for your home, and carry out the installation safely.

Typical cost: £150–£500per room

Every job is different — pricing depends on your property, location, and specific requirements. Describe what you need and a qualified electrician will quote you directly.

How long does it take?

1-3 hours per room for switch replacements with neutral wires present. A full day for a whole-house installation (4-6 rooms). Add half a day if neutral wires need running to multiple switch locations.

Regulations & safety

Safety notice

Never attempt to replace a light switch yourself if you are not confident working with mains wiring. A light switch carries 230V and incorrect connections can cause electric shock, fire, or damage to the smart switch.

Many smart dimmers are not compatible with all LED bulbs. Using an incompatible dimmer can cause flickering, buzzing, or overheating. Your electrician will confirm compatibility before installation.

If your home has no earth wire at the light switch (common in pre-1966 properties), this must be addressed before fitting metal-fronted smart switches. A qualified electrician can advise on earthing requirements.

Part P of the Building Regulations (Approved Document P)

If the installation involves adding a new circuit or significant alteration to an existing circuit (such as running new neutral wires), the work is notifiable under Part P and must be carried out by a registered competent person or inspected by Building Control.

BS 7671:2018+A2:2022 (IET Wiring Regulations)

All electrical work must comply with the current edition of the IET Wiring Regulations, covering cable sizing, circuit protection, earthing, and safe isolation procedures when working on lighting circuits.

Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016

All smart switches, dimmers, and hubs installed must carry appropriate CE/UKCA marking and comply with UK electrical equipment safety standards.

What to expect

The lack of a neutral wire at the switch plate is the single biggest issue in UK smart lighting retrofits. Most homes wired before the mid-2000s do not have neutrals at the switch. Running a neutral to each switch can cost £50-100 per switch on top of the switch cost, or you can choose no-neutral systems like Lutron Caseta (more expensive switches but no rewiring needed).
Smart bulbs (like Philips Hue) are the simplest option — screw them in and control via the app — but they only work when the physical switch is left on. Family members turning off the wall switch is the number one complaint. Smart switches solve this by making the wall switch part of the smart system.
Older UK back boxes are typically 25mm deep, but many smart switches need 35mm or even 40mm. Expect your electrician to swap out back boxes, which means chiselling the wall slightly deeper — factor in minor making good afterwards.
Wi-Fi-based smart switches (no hub required) are tempting but can overload your router if you install many. Zigbee and Z-Wave systems use a dedicated hub and mesh network, which is far more reliable for whole-home setups.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a neutral wire for smart switches?
Most smart switches require a neutral wire at the switch plate for power. Many UK homes do not have this. Your electrician can either run a neutral to the switch (additional cost per switch) or recommend no-neutral smart switches such as Lutron Caseta or certain Philips Hue switches, which work without a neutral but cost more.
What is the difference between smart bulbs and smart switches?
Smart bulbs (like Philips Hue) screw into existing fittings and are controlled via an app, but the wall switch must stay on at all times. Smart switches replace the wall switch itself, so anyone can still use the switch normally while also having app and voice control. For most homes, smart switches are the better long-term solution.
Will smart lighting work with my existing dimmer?
No. Existing rotary or toggle dimmers are designed for halogen or incandescent bulbs and are not compatible with smart systems. They must be replaced with a smart dimmer that is designed for LED loads. Using an incompatible dimmer with smart bulbs will cause flickering and may damage the bulbs.
Can I add more smart lights myself after the electrician leaves?
Yes — adding smart bulbs is as simple as screwing them in and pairing via the app. However, replacing additional wall switches involves mains wiring and should only be done by a qualified person. Your electrician can install all the switches you need in one visit to save on call-out fees.
Which smart lighting system is best for a UK home?
Philips Hue is the most popular for smart bulbs (wide range, reliable, works with all ecosystems). Lutron Caseta is excellent for smart switches, especially in homes without neutral wires. For whole-home systems on a budget, Zigbee switches with a compatible hub offer good value. Your electrician can recommend the best system for your wiring and budget.
