How it works

1

Assessment and product selection

The installer assesses your door type, existing wiring, Wi-Fi signal strength at the front door, and power supply options. For video doorbells, they confirm whether existing bell wire can power the device or if a plug-in transformer is needed. For flat intercoms, they survey the cable route from the entry panel to each flat.

2

Power supply preparation

For wired video doorbells, the installer connects or upgrades the doorbell transformer (typically 16-24V AC). For battery-powered units, they mount the device and charging cable. For flat intercom systems, a mains power supply is installed at the entry panel location, protected by an appropriate fuse or MCB.

3

Mounting and wiring

The doorbell or entry panel is mounted at the correct height (typically 1.2-1.5m) and angle for optimal camera coverage. Wires are connected and routed neatly. For flat systems, cabling is run from the entry panel to each indoor handset location, and to the electric door release mechanism.

4

Electric lock and access control

Where required, an electric strike or magnetic lock is installed on the communal door. The release mechanism is wired to the entry panel and indoor handsets so residents can buzz visitors in. Fob readers or code entry systems are configured if specified.

5

App setup and network configuration

For smart doorbells, the installer connects the device to your Wi-Fi, sets up the manufacturer's app, configures motion zones, alert sensitivity, and any chime units inside the property. Two-way audio and live view are tested from both the app and indoor handsets.

6

Testing and handover

The complete system is tested: doorbell or call button triggers the indoor unit and/or phone notification, two-way audio works clearly, camera provides a clear image (including at night), and door release functions correctly. The installer demonstrates all features and provides relevant documentation.

What's involved

An intercom or video doorbell lets you see and speak to visitors at your door from inside the property or remotely via your phone. Options range from simple video doorbells (Ring, Google Nest, Arlo) that connect to Wi-Fi, to wired audio and video intercom systems for flats and multi-occupancy buildings with electric door release. Professional installation ensures reliable power, correct positioning for the camera field of view, and integration with electric locks or gate access where required.

A video doorbell installation can be straightforward if there is existing doorbell wiring, but many UK homes have no doorbell transformer or the existing wiring is inadequate for a powered video doorbell. Wired intercom systems for flats require cabling between the front door entry panel and each flat, connection to an electric lock release, and often mains power for the entry panel. Access control systems may involve door magnets, release mechanisms, and integration with a fob or code entry system. These installations involve mains wiring, low-voltage cabling, and potentially modifications to communal doors — all best handled by a qualified installer.

How long does it take?

A video doorbell on existing wiring takes 1-2 hours. A video doorbell with new transformer installation takes 2-3 hours. A full flat intercom system with electric door release takes half to a full day (4-8 hours) depending on the number of flats and cable routing complexity.

Regulations & safety

Safety notice

If installing an electric lock release on a communal fire door, ensure the lock is fail-safe (releases on power failure) to maintain fire escape routes. Fail-secure locks (lock on power failure) are not appropriate for fire escape doors and can breach fire safety regulations.

Video doorbells with batteries contain lithium cells. Follow the manufacturer's guidance on operating temperature ranges — extreme cold can reduce battery life significantly, and direct sunlight can cause overheating.

Never modify communal door entry systems in a block of flats without written permission from the freeholder or management company. Unauthorised modifications can affect other residents' access and may breach your lease terms.

Part P of the Building Regulations (Approved Document P)

If the installation involves adding a new circuit (such as a dedicated power supply for an intercom entry panel), the work is notifiable under Part P and must be carried out by a registered competent person. Simple like-for-like doorbell replacements on existing low-voltage wiring are typically not notifiable.

Building Regulations — Communal Areas

Intercom and access control installations in communal areas of flats may require freeholder or management company approval. Modifications to communal fire doors (for electric locks) must comply with fire safety regulations and may require a fire door assessment.

Data Protection Act 2018 / UK GDPR

Video doorbells that capture images of public areas (pavement, road) are subject to data protection law. Homeowners should be aware of their obligations regarding signage, data storage, and responding to subject access requests from neighbours or passers-by.

What to expect

The most common issue with Ring and Nest doorbell installations in UK homes is the lack of a suitable doorbell transformer. Many older homes have no doorbell wiring at all, and some have only a battery-operated bell. The installer either needs to fit a transformer (typically plugged in at the nearest socket and wired to the door) or you choose a battery-powered unit, which needs recharging every 2-6 months.
Wi-Fi signal strength at the front door is critical for smart doorbells. The front door is often the furthest point from the router, and thick walls (especially Victorian solid brick) can reduce signal to unusable levels. If the signal is weak, a Wi-Fi extender or mesh node near the door may be needed before installation.
For flats with existing intercom systems (Entryphone, Comelit, Videx), upgrading a single handset is often possible without replacing the entire system. However, very old systems with degraded wiring may need a full replacement. The installer can test the existing cabling to advise.
Video doorbell cameras have a fixed wide-angle lens. Mounting position and angle determine what you can see. If your door is in a recessed porch, a wedge mount or corner mount kit may be needed to angle the camera towards approaching visitors rather than the opposite wall.

Frequently asked questions

Can I install a Ring or Nest doorbell myself?
If you have existing doorbell wiring with a compatible transformer, a Ring or Nest doorbell is a straightforward DIY job — it mounts with two screws and connects to the existing bell wire. However, if you need a new transformer installed, new wiring run, or have no existing doorbell wiring, an electrician should do the work. Battery-powered models are the easiest DIY option but need regular recharging.
Do video doorbells work without Wi-Fi?
Video doorbells require a Wi-Fi connection to send alerts to your phone and store footage in the cloud. Without Wi-Fi, the doorbell still functions as a basic doorbell (button press triggers a chime) but you lose remote viewing, recording, and notifications. Some models (Ring) offer local storage options, but Wi-Fi is needed for the core smart features.
Can I replace my flat intercom handset with a video unit?
In many cases, yes. If your building has a compatible entry panel (Comelit, Videx, BPT, or similar), upgrading your individual handset to a video monitor is often possible using the existing cabling, provided the entry panel has a camera. Your installer can check compatibility with the existing system before purchasing a new handset.
Do I need my neighbours' permission for a video doorbell?
You do not need formal permission, but you should be considerate. If your camera captures your neighbour's property or a public area, you have obligations under the Data Protection Act 2018. Adjust the motion zone to minimise capturing areas beyond your property. In a block of flats, installing a doorbell camera in a communal area typically requires management company approval.
What doorbell transformer do I need for a Ring doorbell?
Ring Video Doorbells require a transformer providing 16-24V AC, 10-40VA. Many UK homes have a simple 8V bell transformer, which is insufficient. Your electrician can replace it with a compatible transformer, typically mounted near the consumer unit or at a convenient socket location. Ring also sells a plug-in adapter that connects to a standard socket.
