How it works
Appliance assessment
The electrician checks the oven or cooker's maximum power rating (on the data plate) and determines the required circuit rating. They inspect the existing circuit — if a suitable cooker circuit already exists, they verify its condition, cable size, and protection rating. If no circuit exists (e.g., replacing a gas cooker with electric), a new circuit is planned.
Circuit installation (if required)
A new dedicated radial circuit is run from the consumer unit to the cooker position — typically 6mm² twin-and-earth cable on a 32A MCB for standard ovens, or 10mm² on a 45A MCB for high-rated cookers or combined oven and hob installations. The cable is routed, clipped, and concealed as required.
Cooker control unit fitting
A 45A double-pole cooker control unit (with neon indicator) is fitted on the wall within 2 metres of the cooker. This provides a local means of isolation for maintenance and emergencies. Models with a 13A socket outlet are available for a kettle or small appliance.
Appliance connection
The oven or cooker is hardwired to the circuit via the cooker control unit or a flex outlet plate. Built-in ovens may connect via a flex outlet plate behind the unit. Freestanding cookers connect directly from the cooker control unit. All connections are made with the correct torque settings and confirmed for polarity.
Testing and certification
The circuit is tested to BS 7671 standards — insulation resistance, earth continuity, polarity, and MCB/RCD operation. The oven is powered on and checked for correct operation. An Electrical Installation Certificate or Minor Works Certificate is issued. Part P notification is submitted where a new circuit has been installed.
What's included
What's involved
Electric oven installation covers connecting built-in ovens, freestanding electric cookers, and induction hobs to a dedicated high-current circuit. Most full-size electric cookers and ovens require a dedicated 32A circuit with 6mm² cable, a cooker control unit (45A double-pole switch), and a hardwired connection — they cannot be plugged into a standard 13A socket. The installation includes assessing the existing supply, running a new circuit from the consumer unit if needed, fitting the cooker control unit, and making the final hardwired connection to the appliance.
Electric ovens and cookers draw significantly more current than standard household appliances — a full-size electric cooker can draw up to 13kW (over 50A before diversity is applied). This requires a dedicated circuit with correctly rated cable, protection, and a local isolation switch. Connecting a high-powered cooker to an inadequate circuit causes overheating of cables and connections, which is a fire risk. Running a new cooker circuit from the consumer unit is notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations and must be carried out by a qualified electrician.

Typical cost: £80–£200per installation
Every job is different — pricing depends on your property, location, and specific requirements. Describe what you need and a qualified electrician will quote you directly.
How long does it take?
1-2 hours if connecting to an existing cooker circuit. Half a day to a full day if a new circuit needs to be run from the consumer unit.
Regulations & safety
Safety notice
Never connect a full-size electric cooker or built-in oven to a standard 13A plug socket. The sustained current draw far exceeds the socket rating, causing overheating, melting, and potential fire.
Always isolate the cooker circuit at the cooker control unit before pulling out or working behind a freestanding cooker. The cable connection at the back of the cooker carries mains voltage whenever the circuit is live.
If you are replacing a gas cooker with an electric model, the gas supply must be safely capped off by a Gas Safe registered engineer before the electrician installs the new circuit. Do not attempt to cap off gas yourself.
Part P of the Building Regulations (Approved Document P)
Installing a new cooker circuit from the consumer unit is notifiable work under Part P. It must be carried out by a registered competent person or inspected by Building Control. Connecting an oven to an existing cooker circuit is generally non-notifiable.
BS 7671:2018+A2:2022 (IET Wiring Regulations)
The wiring regulations specify circuit design for cooking appliances, including cable sizing using the diversity formula (Appendix A), protection by MCB, and the requirement for a local means of isolation (cooker control unit) within 2 metres of the appliance.
IET On-Site Guide — Cooker Circuit Design
The On-Site Guide provides the standard diversity formula for cooker circuits: first 10A of the rated current at 100%, plus 30% of the remainder, plus 5A if the cooker control unit has a socket outlet. This determines the minimum circuit rating.
